This week we had a late cancellation which meant a hasty ring around and fortunately Warrington obliged and came across to Malone Fields. An unknown team, our scouts didn’t have any history on them somewhat of a mystery even though they only reside in Walton, Warrington.
It didn’t help me, in particular when being introduced to the coach, he said they had just played in a couple of festivals winning them both! I thought great of all the teams to pick! Having said that I did have a renewed confidence in our boys after the Bowden Festival last week...
The weather was wet, the conditions not great for feel flowing rugby however the warm up and team talk went well. Heads in gear, fit and raring to go. We started like a steam train scoring 2 early tries from Springbok Joe and Alex, Warrington came back strongly to score a couple of tries. We were certainly matching them try for try. Springbok Joe added another try along with a couple from Whirlwind Will who was who was more like light winds Will after his late night! Alfie also got on the score sheet with a tremendous solo effort. Game 1 finished 7 tries a piece, we should of won and will a little more luck could of. Great defence from both teams..
Game 2 we made a number of chances with Max, Max C, Rhino Will starting, and again this was a close encounter. Alex scored twice along with Daniel and another from Alfie. Ten Tag Ted produced a stunning try bursting through the strong Warrington defence running straight and fast to score a great try, Dom’s team talk at half time worked well “run straight” was the call and Ten Tag Ted delivered well done. The game was in the balance, I looked to the bench and our super sub was waiting in the wings. Superman Dill looked eager to come on and focused on the job in hand.
Warrington had just scored and the scores were 6 tries apiece, he was handed the ball from Alfie at the restart collected the ball looked one way, taking all the Warrington defence to the right then in an instance stepped the other creating a gap to run through, my heart was pounding wishing his legs would go faster and faster, Dillon had everything in control as he ghosted down the touch line, poetry in motion and scored in the corner for his first ever try. The crowd went wild well his mum did, what a great moment... The game was insignificant now, however with Warrington’s superior power they ran in 2 more tries. The game finished 9 tries to Warrington and 7 tries to Anselmians.
The Display was very pleasing, Warrington are obviously a very talented team winning there last two festivals however our boys matched they all the way producing another great team display. Everyone contributed with Max and Max C both carrying the ball well along with Rhino Will with some great support play. Harry was again very consistent in his attack and defence.
Next week see’s us at the Hoylake Festival which will be another tough test and one the boys will enjoy.... Onwards and Upwards...
Team: Whirlwind Will, Daniel, Football Will, Springbok Joe, Ten Tag Ted, Alfie, Alex, Max Wise, Max Clayton, Harry and Superman Dill.
