It was a lovely sunny Sunday morning at Hoylake and, despite a more challenging week for numbers with lots of players away, we managed to field two great teams of 5 to face Hoylake. We agreed with the Hoylake coaches that we were trying to focus on a few key areas - to make sure that there are at least two passes before every try and to turnover the ball after 6 tags. We are also ensuring that there is turnover ball (with some lenience!) if the players step out, knock-forward or do not pass backwards.
We were really impressed this week with how the children have been able to improve week on week as we tighten the rules. There were some great runs & passes this week and many were not waiting until they were tagged to get a pass away, in fact they were running and searching for a good pass to make to their teammate!
As ever, Hoylake were a great team and we were very well matched, providing really good competition for us. We always try to play with a good team spirit and enjoy our rugby and after the match it was clear that every player had a great time! Tries were evenly scored across the team and some of the tagging was really impressive. The icing on the cake was the great hospitality at Hoylake with hotdogs after the game for the children and a great atmosphere in the clubhouse. The beauty of lots of local Wirral fixtures is that we all know a lot of players, parents and coaches at our local clubs and it makes for a great morning of rugby and socialising for everyone involved!
As ever, thank you to the parents for making the effort with our third away game in succession. We look forward to returning the favour and entertaining Hoylake at Eastham in early January.
We now have a couple of weeks of training before the Halloween 'Anniegeddon Spookfest' on Saurday 30th October followed by a home game against New Brighton on Sunday 31st October.
