ANSELMIANS U10’s MATCH REPORTS
The Saints v Wirral
23/10/16
“A great performance by everyone!”
MOTM - Ben Griffiths
It was not a classic but it was a great performance and to come away from Wirral RUFC with a draw is an excellent return for this age group. Very happy coaches today!!
As usual Wirral fielded a very strong team both physically and technically. They must have not only one of the quickest players on the “circuit” but also some of the biggest players too. Whilst I’d love to see a foot race between Koby and “Matty” we have very little to match them size wise.
It wasn’t a game for the lovers of a fast, flowing rugby but there was a lot to be pleased about. The boys well and truly played Wirral at their own game, they inched, scrapped and sometimes bent the rules, but to be fair they played the game that the ref allowed them to play. Some interesting decisions from the ref, but he was fair to both sides - although I really have to question why we were penalised for “pushing in a ruck”. That was definitely a new one for me!
This is a difficult report to write because every single member of the team played brilliantly and I’m not one to single out players but they each really deserve a bit of praise. Let’s start with Josh Roe who easily had his best game of the season so far, menacing in both attack in defence and really beginning to understand how the game should be played, looking to use the space. All the Williams, O’Halloran, Gavin-Cooper & Fildes were brilliant today, they made yards and were great at the breakdown. Lewis Cairns, Finnan Ashton and Cael Johnston all played with great composure and were very good in defence, they didn't really have a chance to run into space but the work was really done in defence. Sam Booth and Max Frodsham had great games. Sam’s drive down the wing was so close to giving him a try but it was a fantastic effort. Max was again epic in both attack and defence and despite being penalised for pushing in a ruck was again a real force on the pitch. Toby Anderson had his best game for a while, his defence was awesome and he will only get better. Oliver Arnold and Felix James were outstanding as usual, usually both very attacking players but they showed their worth in defence today - nice shiner Felix! Unfortunately both players were suffered minor injuries quite early and perhaps hampered them later on.
Finally this brings me onto our “Man of the Match”, Ben Griffiths. His performance today in every aspect of the game, was outstanding! No other words necessary - outstanding! He made tackles, wanted the ball, didn’t hand off and he scored many tries - I’m sorry I don't know how many but he would definitely of been entitled to take the ball home!
Looking forward to building on this next week against Parkonians and The Malone Field of Dreams!
