ANSELMIANS vs CALDY

On a bright and breezy morning Anselmian lips were smacking at the prospect of entertaining a Caldy team. Although this was not Caldy’s much vaunted ‘Elite’ squad The Saints were certainly ready for action. After all this would only be our 2nd fixture since Christmas. All others had been cancelled. Even the crowd were in good humour as 1 or 2 swore that they could spy spring glinting on the eastern horizon.

Caldy had enough players for 2 and a bit teams and Anselmians just enough for 1 as they were depleted by the joys of Christenings, football and other such fun. It was agreed 3 matches would be played with Saints rotating their squad throughout.

The first match kicked off with Caldy much to the fore and deservedly scored the first try of the morning after some great driving mauls from their much bigger pack.

Saints own Wayne Rooney, Ewan, then took centre stage and scored 2 individual tries before half – time. In the 2nd half Caldy attacked strongly but once again Ewan took matters into his own hands to make the score 3 – 1. Caldy then managed to get back into the match before that man scored again. First session 4 – 2 in favour of Anselmians.

Saints rested some of their squad for the next game, which was a high scoring affair, with Jack delighted at scoring a couple against his former club. Charlie C also scored a great try in the first half to leave Saints 3 – 2 up at half time. Matthew, often threatening to maul Caldy to death on his own scored a try which to was testament to his determination. Charlie M was flourishing in his first ever game at scrum half and Owen and Rory although being 2 of the smallest players on show certainly more than competed in the tight. Ewan came off the bench to score a couple more tries and Owen also crashed over to give Anselmians a 2nd session victory of 6 – 4.

The final session was played out with Caldy putting out a development squad. Saints ran riot and won the session by 10 tries to none. Great credit to Caldy as their inexperienced team kept competing throughout and came close to breaching the Anselmians line on a couple of occasions.

Overall Saints won the morning’s play scoring 20 tries to 6.

Thanks to Caldy won played some great rugby always fairly in the true spirit of the sport and with a smile on their faces and also to Caldy’s coaches who supported both their boys and supported the good play of The Saints. Their help with the refereeing was also appreciated.

All The Saints played well with Ewan scoring a hatful of tries, Jack chipping in with 4 tries. Rory’s driving in the mauls was a joy to behold, Matthew as mentioned above was happy in some of the extended mauls. Charlie C and Thomas were a always a threat in attack. In the pack Liam and Owen won plenty of ball and made countless breaks from the back of rucks and mauls. Charlie M's debut at scrumhalf was great. Ieuan’s defence was probably the best on display and Michael was difficult to stop with ball in hand. Finally a mention for Will whose distribution in the last game was awesome.

Thanks to all.

Saints squad: - Ewan, Jack, Rory, Matthew, Charlie C, Charlie M, Thomas, Will, Ieuan, Michael, Owen and Will.
