Anselmians U10s vs. Ellesmere Port U10s

Sunday 8th November was a cold and wet morning and Anselmians U10s pitched up at Ellesmere Port a little short of numbers. However, by kick – off time a full team plus reserves were all present and ready for action.

They took to the pitch against a much bigger Ellesmere Port team. The game kicked – off and Ellesmere Port pressurised form the start. It was a very physical game and both teams defended vigorously. Sam B, Matthew and Ewan were at the forefront and repelled numerous Port attacks but finally the line was breeched.

Owen made some great sniping runs from the scrum – half position and Saints pushed forward but despite much endeavour from the two Charlies, Ewan and Liam the Ellesmere line was not breeched. Unfortunately Port managed to turnover a Saints attack and charged down the pitch to score a second try.

Time for a brief rest and the second period started. We lost Sam and Matthew to the delights of Laser Quest early in the second period and their strength and tenacity were missed. Jordan’s Dad partly came to the rescue and we were back up to full numbers when he appeared with Jordan’s boots. During this time Owen and Ewan were constantly trying to break through but Port’s greater strength and superior support play led to an additional 2 tries to the home team.

The third period started with Saints 4 – 0 down but Ewan was determined that we would avoid the dreaded bagel. Finally after some great teamwork he crashed over from 2 inches (just like his Dad in his heyday).

Despite struggling with the weight and strength of Port in the scrums Saints managed to keep but the pressure on. However, the ball was again lost in the tackle and Port moved the ball quickly out to the left to score a fine try. Saints came back and completed the scoring when Charlie and Ewan pressurised Port to score that very common try the ‘combined’ effort.

The game finished 5 – 2 to Ellesmere Port and great credit must go to both teams with a good game played in the right spirit. Saints should take heart from the defeat, as in previous meetings we’d been lucky to get nil. and the overall performance was a great creidt to all who played.

Thanks to Ellesmere Port for their great hospitality.

Team: - Owen, Charlie, Charlie, Matthew, Sam, Liam, Ewan, Jordan, Jack, Sam, Sam, Connor
