David v Goliath - 3rds vs 1sts

Sorry this is late everyone, but being a hard done to teacher I have struggled to get the time!

So the Mavericks had a very fortunate situation on Saturday for their fixture versus Acton Nomads in the fact that the 2nd team fixture was cancelled. So a big thanks to the lads from the 2s who played for the Mav’s! Very much appreciated!!

So with a strong side in the offing the Mav’s set about working Acton. There was a number of strong passages of play for the Mav’s with well secured ball and great support running. A much deserved penalty secured the Mav’s the first score of the day, with a try by Tom Redfern. Tom has the amazing skill of constantly breaking tackles to bash through from 22m to score. Despite all the hard work by the Mav’s they appeared to be unable to make that extra break through and following Nomads pressure led to their first try and the scores at half time being 5-5.

The 2nd half started in a similar vein to the first half finish and another scrum with a LITTLE bit of handy work by the Nomads number 7 set up their next score and set the score as 10 -5. However the Mavericks spirit rose, like a phoenix from the flames and with the forwards pressuring the re-start led to a penalty for Capt. G to step up and convert to send the score to 10-8. This re-started the come back. Scotty provided the backs with secure ball in the 2nd half and this led to further pressure on the Nomads.

Tom Redfern led from the front with hard hitting and elusive running and with the backs gaining front foot ball it led to another Redfern score. This led to a change in tide and the Mavericks starting to run a riot. Hard hitting by Dan Jenner and Andy ‘Faketan’ Smith stopped the hard hitting Acton centres and more Mavericks pressure led to Gary Jones intercepting a pass aimed for the backs and him charging through for another score. With Capt G converting this it led to 20-10. Then a ring of changes ensued and 3 more scores. The subs on the day provided the energy needed to see the game out and led to the scores for Tom, which Captain G again converted to take it 27-10.

Then appeared a player who shall not be named for his shameless attempt at kicking the ball and sneaking 2 tries, I shall not name you Nev! Haha!

This led to the final score being 37-10 which was well deserved.

A big thanks to all who played and made sure the club supported each other! We are one club at the end of day and we all play to enjoy and win.

Man of Match: I have to give 2, one to Tom Redfern for his 2 scores and hard work. The 2nd is to the other genuine Welshman in the side, Dan Jenner.
