Far far too much space.

All I can say on a day like this is thank god for rolling subs and thank god for Luke and James.
We turned up at Port Sunlight with 13 players and a sense of foreboding as the team were somewhat depleted owing to stalwarts MIke and Andy being drafted up to the higher ranks. However that sense soon dissipated once Sunlight had declared they could only locate about ten players as there ones were off on a sojourn into the wilds of the Isle of Man . In addition the ref had also cried off last minute as well.
'No worries' says Captain TIm as we can always play 12 aside. Easy !!!!!
Oh how wrong can one man be ???
What started as twelve aside soon turned to 11 aside and then reduced further to ten at one stage. This sounds like a bit of a jolly until you realise the dreaded repercussions of 10 a side rugby ......... WIDE OPEN SPACES !!! A scary thought for a group of mainly 45+ elite athletes .
The game started at a frantic pace with Mavericks kicking off , retrieving the ball, giving said ball to Luke and Luke scoring. That's basically how we can sum up the first half. Other scorers appeared momentarily from the team, James, JAck , even Captain TIm got over the whitewash after being superbly set up by the ever youthful Chris Wainwright ,making his debut for the Mavericks after being promoted from Birkenhead Park. Pretty sure Chris got over for one or two during the match as well. But at 71 points and the onset of Alzheimer's the author is unfortunately an able to recount all the try scorers and the correct order . But we got a lot and they got a few. Uncontested scrums and fast backs were of no help to the traditionally dominant Maverick pack, and made life a lot more difficult.
The thing is ........ Port Sunlight in their canny irresponsibility decided to bring some young fit lads with them , damn that youth !!!! And as a result decided that whatever Luke could do they could do as well. Hence the 37 Points .
At half time the usual mix of water, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators and assorted medical supplements were wheeled on and some word of wisdom ensued from all present ...... FOR GODS SAKE SLOW THE PACE DOWN !!!!!
First half played at 100mph and there's no way we could continue at that rate , especially with The annoying Sunlight youth policy kicking in.
Second half kicked off in much the same way as the first with a series of tit for tat tries , until we slowly edged further and further into the lead. Rampaging runs from James and Craig ensured we got good field position to allow for the tries to keep coming and a lung busting run from 22 yard line to 22 yard line saw Captain Tim wheezing and crying pitifully in a corner waiting to be carted off to the funny farm !!!
In short , a thoroughly deserved win, from a thoroughly deserving team of players with the extra special mention of the day going to Matt Moscrop and Steve Williams who stepped up to the mark and refereed superbly for a half each. thanks guys without your valued contribution the game wouldn't have been played and we would've had to stay in the bar, drinking beer and watching rugby on the telly .......... So thanks Steve and Matt for doing us all a favour.

Love you all,

Captain Tim

P.S. T minus 12 days and counting and May God have mercy on your souls !
