Mavericks playing Maverick rugby

Well , where shall I begin ??
BOOM !!!!!
For those of you faced with the challenge set by the post match berating last week , thank you for your response. This match was won by the personal individual commitment of every player on that pitch, The Mavericks play rugby in a particular style, and when we play we do it well. The game was won by the usual combination of forward domination, setting the stage for strong, fast running through the backs and supported by direct forceful tackling in defence.
On arrival at Malone Field I was met with the sight of the entire New Brighton team, changed, warming up and running through drills with tackle bags, cones and a coaching staff . Oh dear though I, as the usual rag tag bunch of 40+ unfit and temporarily insane Mavericks jogged onto the pitch. As a team we looked at New Brighton and though the task ahead was to be as daunting as the previous weeks calamities at Collegiate .
As we approached kick off, Captain Tim gathered the troops for the huddle and re-Inforced the message from the previous week, commitment, concentration and a belief in our ability to play good rugby.
First half kicked off and we received the ball and immediately took New Brighton to task up front getting the better in rucks and mauls and driving them back into their own 22 from the kick off. The forward domination became clearly obvious at the first scrum when not only did Gary win ball against the head we then drove the New Brighton eight back to put their backs on the back foot and so we continued for the rest of the first half.
Unfortunately due to the author playing out of position in the second row , I was unable to keep track of the scorers, this is mainly due to the combination of an innate ability to remember anything other that name , rank and serial number and my total lack of fitness to keep up with our fast running backs.
Needless to say the scorers were our temporary signing James playing at eight who got one, Dan our exuberant 'genuine' Welshman (nev, please note) who got a brace and the ever tanned, ever youthful , slightly expanded centre Andy Smith who managed to get over the whitewash for a score.
At this stage I need to announce my first 'special mention' of the day, and this goes to Gordon Rodgers who, despite the grief we give him, performed excellently with the boot, kicking all of the conversions and kicking for touch and making some excellent ground for us during the eighty, in addition to being part of what could've been so close to our try of the season if only for an effective tackle by one of the New Brighton players, well played Gordon.
Second special mention goes to some of our esteemed Maverick guests, namely Nick Spearpoint, Gary Jones, Ian Braithwaite and our friend from Caldy, James, all of who played a valuable role in what was a fabulous team performance.
Also thanks to Graham Keen who was left in sole responsibility for every line out ours and theirs as the ball never got past the two jumper for either team.
If I had to pick a man of the match this week it would go to Dan, for his sterling work alongside Andy at containing an effective New Brighton centre partnership that could've caused us problems if we'd allowed them any space at all, together with his two tries and some fantastic tackling the bit that tipped him over the edge from the other candidates (Gordon,James and graham) was a piece of full back work last week where even the collegiate players gave him praise for picking a ball up off the floor, in full flight with one hand.
Right now that Dan has the head the size of a basketball, I will move forward and thank everyone for their efforts. Thanks to Dave Sixsmith for an excellent refereeing performance, and thanks and good luck for the rest of the season to New Brighton ....... T minus 4 weeks and counting !!!!!!
