A game of two players

Hello and welcome to the new year, I realise it's been a while and match reports have been sadly missing from previous weeks, however , fear not as Captain Tim is back in the saddle !!
This weeks The Mavericks welcomed our friends from Wallasey in the first of a two header comprising league (this week) and cup (next week) . An early indication for this week demonstrated that The Mavericks had a strong team with plenty of options on the bench. An interesting addition to our squad this week were our two junior colts making their first foray into the world of 'senior rugby' . Captain Tim had heard rumours over previous weeks over the talent and ability within the junior ranks, little did he realise exactly how talented these individuals could be.
Before we get to the nitty gritty of the days performance I would like to take a moment to make special mention of Plum . Once again Plum turned up, kit in hand, ready to comIt to The Mavericks and was a fantastic addition to the squad this week, however when it came to the crunch Wallasey arrived at Malone field with 13 players and Plum graciously agreed to play for them . Together with Jack this allowed for an even Game of 15 players per side. Plum played the full eighty minutes for Wallasey and was a welcome addition to their team. The Wallasey skipper spoke to me after the game and asked for me to pass on their gratitude for a job well done. Thanks Plum from all your friends in The Mavs .
Right onto the game ......... As I said, Wallasey arrived with only 13 players and were provided with an additional two players to even . The Maverick pitch resembled the Somme at the start of the day with thick mud welcoming the players , the game kicked off and it became evident quite quickly that on this occasion The Mavericks were going to be in the ascendancy as a quick try placed the Mavs in the lead at 5 nil.
The tries rained in for the home team with Wallasey achieving a try through their pack driving over from close range.
At this time I feel it appropriate to highlight some stand out performances from the home team. Our two new junior colts Ben and Ross played like future first teamers from the moment they first time they got their hands on the ball. Ben scoring a hat trick on his debut with some elusive running and incisive support play, Ross was an absolute animal with the ball in hand and showed remarkable strength beyond his seventeen years as he scattered the Wallasey pack to the four corners.
It bodes well for the future of this club that we have such talent rising through the teams and I'm sure there will be many more debutants over the next twelve months to move Anselmians back in the upwards direction.
It was a perfect blend of youth and experience on the day, with guest star appearance from Duncan Hendry and a welcome return of Lee Jones into the centre . The pack dominated in the scrums with Dom, Craig and Steve providing their usual immense power and stability in the front row, supported with strength in the second row by Graham and Duncan. Finally the back row mobility and strength of Les, Luke and new starter Ben Perez. The backs performed to their usual high standard providing strong, aggressive running through Neil at scrum half feeding to Captain Gordon at fly half. Lee and Andy provided stability and strength in the centres with Ben, Jamie and Scotty providing the back three security .
A great overall team performance led from the front by Captain G man (still unbeaten) !!!.
A final score of 65-7 provided The Mavericks with one of their biggest wins of the season which bodes well for the rest of the season. Great individual and team performances . Well done guys .
Tries this week Luke Williams bagged three together with our debutant Ben Perez who also got a hat trick of tries, Duncan Hendry and Lee Jones managed a brace each ably supported by Andy Smith who got over the whitewash once. Our kickers for today where Captain Gordon who slotted 4 conversions and Scotty who chipped in with one conversion.
Thanks to the bench of Tim, Ross, Jack, Plum and Mike Potter, for supporting the 15 starting players . And in particular , once again to Plum and Jack for assisting Wallasey in their hour of need.
