Mavericks just too strong on the day

Wallasey welcomed The Mavericks to Cross Lane on a warm Saturday afternoon, in what was to prove a hotly contested battle between two teams motivated towards the end result. Wallasey looking for their firs win of the season and The Mavericks looking to build on a good start to their first league season.
As a result this promised to be a real humdinger of a tie. The mavericks fielded a strong starting line up of familiar faces, with the welcome return of an absent friend Scotty Gill. In turn Wallasey were bolstered by a few additions to their normal starting 15 , due to some players being unable to travel away on the day. This just added to the atmosphere at Cross Lane.
Mavericks won the toss and elected to receive the kick off , Captain Tim gathered the team together to advise that despite Wallasey lack of success thus far they were under no circumstances to be underestimated as they have always provided a stern test and as a result the usual high levels of concentration and discipline must be maintained in order to succeed.
Mavericks received the kick and immediately made there intentions clear by running the ball back at the opposition who came hard into the contact area and provided a stern physical presence in the middle of the park. Territory and possession remained 50:50 for the first ten minutes whilst both teams sussed each other out. The breakthrough came about fifteen minutes in when Luke Williams took possession of a loose ball, broke two or three tackles to run in under the posts. First try to The Mavericks !
As the game progressed The mavericks managed to cross the whitewash on a further five occasions through great individual performances from Lee Jones who's typically hard running and blustering physical presence got him a brace, a further two well taken tries from winger Jay and a fine darting finish from the ever youthful Neil Brookes.
At every stage of the game Wallasey never let their heads dropped and continued to play a hard physical game, they pinned us back on our line for the final ten minutes of the game and it was only as a result of the now typically robust and determined defence of The Mavericks that Wallasey were denied their reward.
It was a real credit to all players in the pitch that such a stern, physical match ended with the traditional post match drinks, food and.good social atmosphere. We wish Wallasey well for the remained of the season and look forward to the return fixture at Malone field on 11th Jan next year.
At this stage the author once again wishes to note significant events of the day, firstly Steve (I've retired..... Honestly !!!) Williams playing consistently far better than he ever did before he retired, Captain Tim with his solo valiant 30 metre gazelle like sprint to the line ( a thing of true majesty) and the first touch of the day by Andy Smith when presented with a three on one overlap decided instead to kick the ball away and straight to the opposition full back ..... Cheers !!!

Thanks for the game boys , roll on Crosby St Mary's next week !

Tim
