Christmas festivities boosted by a great performance on the pitch.

Mavericks payback comes true.

The Mavericks welcomed Prenton to Malone Field this week with a strong desire to payback Prenton for the heavy defeat of earlier in the season. A strong, motivated team were committed to improving on previous performances against our friends from Junction 3.
The Gaffer, swanning about in the Lake District was unable to be present for the game and as such a conglomerate of alacadoos, subs and general spectators took on the role of Manager in support of Andy ‘in the zone’ Smith captaining in the middle of the Park. Both teams took to the park with Prenton fielding a strong, youthful looking team kitted out in their University if Chester training tops. This was going to be a tough game with plenty of chances to fall foul of both conditions and quality of the opposition.
The prize on offer at the end of the day was the annual Christmas festivities and under no circumstances was that to be spoilt by a bad day at the office.
Kick off cane and the first half was at times very scatty. A lot of drop balls and knock ons form the mavs but some great running from the backs and hard tackling from 1-15. On occasion the lack of experience in some of the positions in the forwards provided Prenton’s big pack with a physical advantage and this drove us back and temporarily the Mavs found themselves on the back foot. With a few changes and great communication from the 7 managers on the side line John Oats came on and instantly made an impact in the pack. Shortly afterwards a mistake from Prenton’s backs found mike weatherston running 3/4’s of the pitch to score. As the initial challenge from the Prenton pack was equalised the majority of the first half was played in the Prenton half and with constant pressure vital scores from Steve Hearn , Tom Campbell and Billy Alderson making a welcome return to the Maverick team.
2nd half was much like the 1st but with hardly any ball handling errors. Great rugby was played by all players and gaps in the Prenton defence lead to 3 more tries from Matt Brookes Jay Owens and Tom Redfearn an excellent kicking game from Dom Neville ensured that Prenton were punished heavily for any indiscretion and with an exception conversion rate allowed for a rapid expansion of the score line.
Man of the match went to Steve Hearn . Both for his acceptance of extended positional requirements at time on the pitch through to his game play, pack leadership, tackling and aggression. Another visible sign of the great player and club man ‘Spot’ is.
Fabulous performance on the pitch and by all accounts a legendary performance off the pitch post match as well.
