A combined effort produced a great game .

Rain, rain and rain again.
This weeks game sums up all that is great with local social rugby. The true spirt of the game was demonstrated from all concerned .
A huge thanks goes out to Mold Rugby Club and Old Parkonians who thanks to the collective will of all concerned managed to get a game played. Following a massive range of unavailabilities and injuries The Gaffer found himself with 5 players on Friday and as such found it necessary to cry of the fixture.
However on ringing Old Parks they had other ideas . “Just come down, we’ll get the game on” ...... fantastic, game on.
Shortly after another act of god and Mold had their game cried off by their opposition , as a result four of their lads turned up to play . In total The Mavericks team consisted of four Old Parkonians, four Mold Rugby club lads and six Anselmians . Oh the joy of social rugby .
The game started in a rain storm that Noah himself would’ve been grateful for . The intense rain was only superseded by the horizontal gale that blew from one end of the pitch . One got the opinion that today was not going to be the calypso rugby event we’d been hoping for . Instead it resembled something of the old Fran Cotton in the mud photo (it’s an age thing). It was a ball up the jumper kind of day with both teams picking and going from the base of the maul and ruck with equal levels of success. On the odd occasion the ball did venture outside of the fly half it was immediately returned into the warm embrace of the sodden pack.
Old Parkonians scores first , then The Mavs, then Old Parks and so it continued to see-saw until the final score of 25-22 in favour of Old Parkonians was reached. A totally deserving score to the club without whose assistance the game would never have been played .
This week special mention must go to all the guesting players and in particular to Neil Davies who scored a half the length of the pitch snaking run past half the Old Parks Team to score under the post ( it was later asked why on earth he couldn’t do that for Mold week in week out) obviously something to do with the Wirral air. A massive congratulations to Kev who scored his first try for the Mavericks, hopefully one of many yet to come, another fine performance, well done.
This weeks man of the match goes to one of the giants of the game and I mean that literally and figuratively. That giant being Steve Stockford aka “Stocky” who not only scored two tries (Tim Woodward stylee) from a massive two yards out but more importantly constantly moved us forward took the ball into contact and made metre after metre, usually when it was needed most. Great to have you back with us mate and here’s to many more games.
A filthy , muddy, soaked, windswept day at Old Parks ..... Jeez I wouldn’t have it any other way !
