Birkenhead Park 4’s - 1
The Mavericks - 0
The game itself is best assigned to the annals of history and buried in the deep dark recesses of those filed in the best forgotten category.
What this match report will focus on is the positives that came out of the game, the afternoon and the evening. A realising that the Park team that faced us was a mix of players from all over the Wirral brought together under the ‘Park’ banner to create a highly skilled, highly motivated and completely dominant outfit that having put 74 unanswered points on Wirral the previous week gave The Mavs a similarly torrid time this week. For a change, however, it was all completed within the ‘Spirit of the Game’ there were no over exuberant celebrations, no derogatory comments, just an acceptance that they were a better team and there was genuine light heartedness and support for our players from the opposition. A noticeable difference from years gone by when we have played against them. I left the ground yesterday with a new founded respect for a team above us in skill level and fitness but similar to us in outlook and respect for the game of rugby. After a few beers in the club and with Yez Elwell being awarded man of the match for standing up to an afternoon of relentless onslaught the Mavs decamped to The Argyl where we continued in the evenings celebration. Great company, good beer and live music with a special rendition of ‘The Caterpillar’ by Captain fantastic on the dance floor.
The social was fantastic, the game less so. But we’ve a great group of lads waking up on a Sunday morning with sore bodies and sore heads but all saying the same thing.
“Bring on next week so we can do it all again”
Love this club , love this team.
