Traditional pre season fixture ends in victory

I know this is a little delayed as our usual scribe from last year has left the team , I knew Williams was useful for something. Anyway, onwards and upwards. As I type the hazy recollections of another late August balmy afternoon bring back memories of The Mavericks traditional pre-season match up against Our friends from Mold.
Before the game had even commenced a meet and great of players old and new took place at Makone field and it was a great surprise to see so many Mavericks and would be Mavericks wanting to don the shirt this season. Before the business at hand was to be addressed a small matter of last seasons player of the year was to be settled. Captain Tim gathered all present into the clubhouse and matter a typically eloquent, witty, charming and highly intellectual speech the award was presented to .......... Andy Smith , well done!
Anyway, enough of that nonsense , on with the match. Both teams presented onto a warm and sunny third team pitch (we need to come up with a name for our pitch) with a healthy supply of players and as such it was decided that 3 periods of 30 minutes would be played allowing for roll on roll off subs . The game started in its usual frantic manner with The Mavericks quickly taking the initiative with a well worked try . Unfortunately, as per usual no record has been kept of the try scorers other than there were quite a few . I will hopefully update this and improve on it for next weeks fixture . The scoreline speaks for itself. More important than the scoreline this week was the manner and spirit in which the game was played. The usual Maverick spirit took hold with plenty of hard tackling in defence and strong running in attack made us very difficult to live with. Mavericks supported and played well as a unit with forwards and backs interlinking well in all areas of the park . It was great to see some new players as well as the usual old guard . I would like to make particular reference to our new second row Paul, who despite having never played rugby before showed some real spirit and I'm sure will be a very good player for usthis season. Steve Williams , playing his last game ( again !!!) also needs a quick mention.
The overall performance bodes well for the forthcoming season and with determination and our usual playing style I'm certain The Mighty Mavericks can go from strength to strength .
Once again thanks for all the efforts you guys put in week in week out and good luck this season .
