Anselmians Mavericks 34 – 15 Port Sunlight
On only the 4th weekend of the season, these two teams met for the second time, in what was to turnout to be a closer encounter than 2 weeks ago.
The Mavericks, missing some familiar faces, and welcoming some new ones took to the field, and started the quicker with a try from captain Tim Woodward – the ‘Ashtonesque’ dive was a sight to behold, & conversion by Gordon Rogers. 7 – 0 to the Mavericks.
Jack Woolley, starting his first game at scrum half, ran the play, and did well to cope with the over-eager Sunlight back row. It’s good to see that his hunger for the game has returned, & a bright future awaits. The experienced pack dominated the set piece, putting Sunlight under pressure.
The game then entered a period of both sides having good possession, but failing to capitalise & convert to points. Some ill-discipline by Sunlight gifted a penalty opportunity to the Mavericks, duly converted by Gordon Rogers, and then a few missed tackles handed an unconverted try to Sunlight. The first half closed 10–5.
A change of personnel at half-time, saw a resurgence from the Mavericks. Two quick tries from Phil McGunigall & Matt Moscrop, both converted, & another penalty by Gordon Rogers, eventually put some daylight between the scores. But, as in any game, if you take your eye off the prize you will get punished, & Sunlight ran in 2 more tries, before new signing Scott Wilson (on his debut) scored the final try of the game.
It’s worth noting the superb performances from Jack Woolley at scrum-half & Phil McGunigall, as well as the Man of the Match performance from Gordon Rogers.
Lesson of the day: Don’t kick the ball in your own 22, to the oppositions biggest player!
Scoring this week were: Tim Woodward, Phil Mc Gunigall, Matt Moscrop & Scott Wilson. Gordon Rogers 4 cons & 2 penalties.
Thanks again to Port Sunlight for yet another great game, played in good spirit as always, & to Martin Roden for officiating superbly.
See you again later in the season.
