WARNING:- PLEASE DON’T FEED THE DUCKS.

After last weeks Curry Night the Ducks were certainly well fed.

Before the match report I just want to thank last weeks Curry Night Sponsors, McGowan Site Services Ltd and J.Dermott Roofing Ltd and the Poppadums were sponsored by Steve Pilgrim and Jamie Kimpton. A Great Night was had by everyone who made it. Matt Dowler was the only one to play last week, even if it was Touch with the Queens Ladies Team.

This was a make or break game for the lads, win and we put a bit of daylight between ourselves and the bottom three, lose and relegation was a distinct possibility, no pressure then.

The pitch was in remarkably good condition after all the rain we’ve had and perfect for the running game we wanted to play. A few simple instructions before the start, play in the right areas, do not get embroiled in a forwards battle and earn the right to play but heyho who ever listens.

The lads started well and an early try from Scott Tunna was converted by George 7 - 0, now let’s try running it out from our twenty two, let’s invite pressure, let’s make a mistake, let’s concede a try. 7 - 5. For the next 15 minutes Helsby were the dominant side, strong carrying forwards making good yards. I’m not quite sure what changed but for the last 15 minutes the penny dropped Nath and George controlled the game, feed the backs and they will score, trys from George, Andy and Charlie before the try of the decade from Captain Gilly, an eighty metre rampaging run from deep inside our own half. He beat all fifteen of the opposition hand offs aplenty, bouncing off tacklers right, left and centre for an individual solo masterpiece. Halftime 33 - 5.

Helsby aren’t a bad team but like ourselves they have suffered from lack availabilities and they have sadly had to drop a team during the season, hopefully with there new clubhouse they can attract new players much like us.

The second half started pretty much the same as the first half, we tried the Hollywood offloads, didn’t win the breakdown, the ball was slow and scrappy, eventually however concerted pressure tells and the last fifteen minutes as Helsby ran out of steam we again cut loose, tries from Lee, Tom and Dan wrapped up the game. Full Time 51 - 5.

A hard fought win against a brave and determined Helsby side, good luck to them for the rest of the season.

As usual the Man of the Match probably went to Nath, not sure he’s counted all his votes yet. Then again in my opinion and that’s the one that counts Scott Tunna was impressive, put himself about, carried, tackled, hit his men at the line out time and scored a good try.

Diffy Duck had several contenders, Tom Redfearn and Harrison’s kicking, Chris McIvor and his ball handling, Dan Jenner’s “I need a breather,” when everyone else in the pack is older than him. After giving it serious thought the award must go to Captain Bullsh-t, the description of his try are his own words, my memory of the try, he fell over the line from five yards out, crates on you Gilly but if his drinking yesterday is anything to go by it’s waters all round next week lads.

Mother Duck.
