COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE MAN.

COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE MAN.

neil redfearn9 Feb 2020 - 13:36

Neil Brookes rolls back the years, to lead the Mighty Ducks.

Firstly I must make a massive apology to Jack Richards, quite rightly he was in my Dream Team but as he pointed out to me yesterday I didn’t mention he was also with us from the start another man to have played at the club Twenty Two seasons Man and Boy, apologises again mate, Jack take a bow (I still hate Liverpool and yes I owe you a tenner).

In what was again another trying week in the Anselmian selection process, it was a surprise we actually got eighteen men out, only four changes from Tuesday this time around.

Massive thank you again to Tim and the Mavs, gents without you we’d be proper Donald Ducked. At times like this you need people to step up and give there all, this as been happening for the last few months and yesterday we got our reward.

We played against a Lymm 3rd team full of ex 1st teamers who have played together for years, they’re streetwise, played the referee (called him by his first name) and their gamesmanship infuriated at times, good luck to them if they can get away with it.

We scored first Jack slicing through the home defence to score by the posts, Andy converting. Now being on top we implode, the last few weeks have been hard, we throw an intercept, Lymm go the full length of the pitch and score 5 - 7. We’re pressing can’t score, turn down the three points. Defensive slip up, an UNUSUAL attempt at a cross field kick by Lee, gathered up by Lymm 12 - 7. Wheels are falling off again?

Now maybe the incident that changed the game, pressing again, home defence under pressure, home scrum creaking, penalty after penalty, Josh gets punched in the back of the head, hand bags and JT throws the ball at his opposite number, in what can only be described as something a Premiership footballer would have been proud of, said player falls to the floor groaning and rolling round, no place on a rugby pitch for theatrics like that.

J T you shouldn’t have thrown the ball but I can understand the frustration, yellow justly deserved. The yellow card for the instigator of it all was lenient to say the least.

Half time and the boys are frustrated, annoyed but most of all confident, we’re the better team, they’re living off our errors. They are a decent side but we are better. A few changes, a few wise words and we’ve got a game to win.

Lymm came out in a confident mood and now decided to test out young Charlie on the wing, a crossfield kick nearly ended in a try and then some neat handling stretched our defence and they score out wide, 19 - 7 down and after the results of the last few weeks, there were a few nervous faces on the touch line.

If there was ever any doubt it certainly wasn’t amongst our pack, to a man they were outstanding, they set the platform and took the game to Lymm, dominant at scrum time, not prepared to take a backward step, Chris, Tyler, JT, both Joshs, Tom H, Colin, Andy, Edgy and Gilly take a bow boys. As always is these cases the pack have to rely on the glory boys to win them the game, two tries out wide Tom R and Charlie, and another one after some neat footballing skills by Tom R and a nutmeg by Lee before Lee touched down. 24 - 19. A well deserved win.

Duck of the Day, well I was giving it to Neil just because I can but after a great team performance they all deserved it. Diffy Duck really only had one candidate early doors, the crossfield kick was horrendous Lee but when you go down quicker than a German U Boat Captain and roll about more than Neymar, the plaudits go to an opposition player for a change. My crate next week as I make the awards.

Cheers Boys great day out.
