MOPEDS, HIT & RUNS BUT NO SNATCH & GRAB.

MOPEDS, HIT & RUNS BUT NO SNATCH & GRAB.

neil redfearn1 Apr 2018 - 12:28

Forget Dumb & Dumber, I got Moan & Moaner.

After what has been a interesting week to say the least, we fielded the strongest side possible yesterday, Gilly arrived back Friday afternoon after an eventful break in Thailand, moped accident, stitches, hospitals, not ideal preparation for a local derby, hopefully both Gilly and his better half recover soon. We lost Ben early Saturday morning, victim of an hit and run and although he didn’t manage to play yesterday he formed a great partnership with James Dear on the touch line (Moan & Moaner) I wasn’t short of advise.

We started the game well yesterday and after some concerted pressure Skippy cruised over after some good forward play and slick handling by the backs, James added the extras 7 - 0, 4 minutes gone. Wirral showed why they are one of the top sides in the division and came back strongly, big ball carriers, old heads and well drilled, for the next 20 minutes we struggled to get any ball and when we did were guilty of being a bit naive, we have to earn the right to play and we have to play in the right areas but we are a young team and who am I to question the lads (I was awful). Wirral grabbed a well deserved try on 25 minutes to bring themselves back into the game. 7 - 5.

The one thing the lads have shown this season above all else is that they play for eachother, we are a team and yesterday they all tackled, chased back, scrambled and put their bodies on the line. The forwards last week were awesome and again yesterday even with a bit of re-jigging created a platform for the backs to play. Penalty was once again the oppositions friend and indeed probably denied us more opportunities to put pressure on when we were in the Red Zone. When we did manage to get some ball, we always looked threatening and after a period of pressure Browny forced his way over the line to increase our lead. James again adding the extras 14 -5. Half time.

Wirral were the better side in the first half but the second half was definitely ours, a yellow card for a no arm tackle didn’t help Wirral and in the ten minutes they were down to fourteen men, the forwards put them to the sword, two tries from set pieces close to the line proves it’s not all about bulk but technique also helps. Driving mauls produced tries from DJ and Matt, James the Boot made one successful conversion.
We had some sustained periods of pressure but Wirral never took a backward step and tackled everything that came at them including the REFEREE, there was a free pint on offer for the perpetrator but no one would admit responsibility. 26 - 5 and the sack of sh#te were dominant.

In a bizarre moment late in the game Sam Bram received a yellow card for a deliberate knock on after a great cover tackle by Skip, he actually knocked the ball back towards our tryline not forward, as he was leaving the field Wirral took a quick tap and crashed over whilst the lads were trying to reorganise. Final score 26 - 10.

Some great performances yesterday, Gilly complete with stitches and jet lag was everywhere, carried, tackled and organised, he’s ready to step back up when needed, Tyler and Dylan continue to impress for two lads so young. Oatesy carried on from last week, where have you been for the last few months matey? Chrissy Mc and Hastey add the experience and nouse. James W stepped in at Ten and organised the backs, kicked well out of hand and even better off the tee. Sol Campbell put himself about.

There was also a promising debut yesterday by another one of the colts, Chrissy Mc exercised his persuasive skills and got Will Sass to play, in wasn’t a pretty game to play in but he came off the bench and slotted into the back row, I can’t pay him any bigger compliment than to say he slotted in seamlessly to replace Dylan, big shoes to fill as he’s been outstanding all season.

Duck of the Day went to Skip, he was everywhere in defence, he made metres every time he carried, scored a great try early doors and had his best game in what’s been a good season, another one who’s ready to step up if needed.

Diffy Duck, had a few contenders, Cams volley, Tom Reds kick from hand, Sam Brams yellow card, I had decided not to award it, a victory over Wirral can have no Diffy but I hadn’t seen DJ’s Boots, mate even Dom Nev wouldn’t wear them, no fashion sense in Wales obviously and Ben even reckoned they were sheep skin lined.

Another feather in the cap, another win over a team above us in the division, yet again we dent someone’s promotion hopes. I’ve been saying it all season, we are better than our league position suggests. Oh and by the way, our first team won as well yesterday away at Widnes.
