Anyone who saw yesterday's score could be forgiven for thinking we had another relatively easy victory. All credit must be given to New Brighton for never giving up and indeed at times making the boys work hard. A strong running centre gave the lads ample tackling practice with Connor Clayton and an equally impressive George Birss leading the tackle count. New Brighton's effective use of the pick and go off the back of the ruck when close to our try line caused plenty of problems.
We put some great passages of play together at times, with the backs running in ten of our thirteen tries, a great debut performance from Theo Bertola with a hat trick on the wing, one of the high points of the day which deservedly won him "Duck of the Day."
A couple of low points Nath Redfearn limping off with a knee injury, hopefully not another torn cruciate, although it didn't look too good and James Deer also limping off.
Divvy Duck went to Jamie Owen who needs a new watch as his time keeping isn't the best, getting lost by the boating lake on the seafront didn't help, but worse still, turning up in Birkenhead Park kit takes the biscuit.
Another low point from the game yesterday is our Duck going " missing in action" anyone who as anything to report, can contact Tyler Brookes, the man in charge when said duck flew the coop.
A massive high point from yesterday's games, even if not all the results went our way, Gilly, Taggy, Oatesy and Olly all playing for the first team, all have played significant roles in the 2nd team this season and deserve their chance, something that's been long overdue and is richly deserved.
With pressure being applied for 1st team shirts it won't be long before the 1s get their first win, another plus from yesterday, the1st team squad drinking together back at the club later, no matter what team they played in, that's not happened for a few years.
Mother Duck.
