Well, here we go again. Another season at Molone Field and another season of fantastic Maverick rugby to look forward to ....... oh hang on......... this ain't Maverick this is Crusaders. Welcome to the new boys on the block, and welcome to the new managed Mr Ed Byrne. Anselmian Crusaders have replaced the old second team to demonstrate the inclusive nature of rugby at the club this year. No longer is it first second and third instead all players have the opportunities to be part of the bigger club squad.
And so it proved in the first game of the season as a strong although youthful team took to the pitch to play Southport at Eastham. Following a bit of fluctuation with playing positions the final 15 took to the field of play and kick off ensued.
Anselmians immediately secured possession and demonstrated the speed they had in abundance as they broke the gain line to secure position and possession and leave Southport relying on their strong tackling defensive structure to save them .
The game was evenly matched after about 20 minutes when a powerful forward effort positioned us in the Southport 22. Following some strong driving Lewis Keen went over for the first of The Crusaders 5 tries of the day. Unfortunately we weren't blessed in the kicking department and the conversion was missed .
As I said earlier the team that took to the pitch contained a number of our new recruits to senior rugby and one of these 'new guys' deserves a special.mention . The Crusaders full back Macca had an inspired game and caused the opposition no end of headaches , whenever in possession his speed in attack and positioning in defence were decisive and not only did he manage to secure a try of his own he was also decisive in the setting up of a further two tries. As a result he secured the initial man of the match award of the 2015 season. Congratulation. Other noticeable try scorers today, we're Martin Brown, Josh Farrelly and Benno. Southport achieved a try in the second half and provided our young team with a stern test and were an excellent opposition and am sure our lads are looking forward to the return leg.
Onwards and upwards
