Anyone reading yesterday's programme will be confused when I describe this as a clash of the only two unbeaten sides in the division, when I read it even I wasn't sure, it's been that kind of week.
St.Marys came to Malone Field for a cup game undefeated so far this, so something had to give, they started off like a house on fire and only some terrific defence by the lads prevented them from scoring. The first half from then on was like a blur, some great running rugby, led to tries from Theo, Matt Doolan on his Ducks first day out, D J and the evergreen Hastey. Olly Loveday doing the honours with the boot, 24 - 0 at half time.
Whether it was the loss of Beano(D Js spelling) sorry Benno you were having a stormer until you dislocated your shoulder, the break, the change of ends or the fact St.Marys aren't actually that bad a side I don't know.
The second half was a completely different story, St. Marys showed they weren't done scoring three converted tries and looking the most likely to win, agreed two sin binnings didn't help and also a definitely dubious try.
TWINS moments, you have to love them, picture it, winger in full flight, honing in on our try line and our very own Arnie, all 6'8" of him knocks him into next week, big mistake, no hands. Now the referee has no alternative but to produce a yellow card, poor old Danny at 5'6" the look on his face was a picture (the, it wasn't me moment) as he trudged off. Case of mistaken identity was an understatement.
Jamie came on with about 25 minutes to go, played 5 minutes, didn't make a tackle, got a yellow card, came back on, threw one ball in at line out which wasn't straight,(when we're down on their 5 metre) not the best of days I can hear you saying. Well every Duck as their day, we turn over the ball at the resultant scrum and with 5 minutes to go, Jamie skips over to score the winning try.
Commitment boys means everything, Matt Thornton coming back from Bristol Uni to play, Cam driving back from Newcastle Saturday morning, can't say anymore than that Top Ducks.
Just a note, Theo and Toby does your mum not know you both drink? Blackcurrant in the clubhouse after the game, definitely must be a Welsh thing.
# 2s didn't lose.
Mother Duck.
