Anselmians 2nd XV vs Ellesmere Port 2nd XV

Tony McArdle1 Mar 2010 - 18:53

No league opposition for the 2nd team this week but local rivals Ellesmere Port provide stiff test in friendly.

With a break from league action this week the 2xv had a friendly match against local rivals Ellesmere Port 2xv.

The fixture was an opportunity to give two of our youngsters a full 80 minutes, Nate Redfern at scrum half and Callum Kenny at full back both of them fully justifying thier selection.

Anselmians 2xv expected a keenly fought game but were perhaps taken aback by the strength and committment of the opposition but did take the lead after 5 mins with Pete Rees going in under the posts for a try converted by Chris Wells.

Unfortunately before any further score discipline again let us down when following a bit of handbags and talking back to the referee Stuart Brown (hooker) and Ellesmere No 9 were shown yellow cards. Withstanding the inconvenience to the front row and back at full strength on 25 mins an Ellesmere kick out of their 22 was charged down for Sean Hastewell to cross the line 12----0.

Continuing to play well with forwards and backs involved a ruck formed inside Ellesmere's 22 from which Nate Redfern retrieved ball made a break through the defence gave a good pass to Duncan Hendry (at 8) to score, conversion Chris Wells 19----0.

A score line that perhaps flattered not reflecting Ellesmere Port competiveness.
Being a friendly , and going well, Tim Woodward took over from Toby Armstrong in the back row with Nick Hearn(although a back row player) replaced Martin Gerrard at outside centre.

However Duncan Hendry recieved a knock mid-way into the second half so to avoid any further injury came off for Toby to return.
The scoring continued 5 mins into the 2nd half with a solo display of strength and intent from Kellum Friday crossing the line under the posts , Chris Wells making his 3rd conversion 26----0.

Then maybe because of the unusual line up it nearly all went wrong with Ellesmere getting 2 tries in a period of just 12mins, neither of which they were unable to convert 26---10.
The final 20 minutes saw both sides attacking and defending alternately into a stalemate with the score remaining 26---10 at the whistle.
