Preview – Macclesfield (Cheshire Cup).
This weekend we take a break from North 2 West to play the delayed quarter final of the Cheshire Cup at Macclesfield. The winners will play Lymm at home in the semi-final.
Older members may remember the 1980-81 season when we beat Lymm in the quarter final, only to lose at Birkenhead Park in the semi-final. At the time we were the first “junior” club to get as far in the Cheshire Cup.
Macclesfield, with Wirral, play in the Northern Premier league, two divisions above us. Currently, they are seventh on 57 Points. Macclesfield have won eleven and lost eleven of their 22 games.
Last week, away to Kirby Lonsdale, they won convincingly 7-59, but, in fact, 2022 has been disappointing. They have won only three of their eight games since January.
Last week, in our last trip to Cumbria this season, we overcame a weakened St. Benedict’s, 3-78, making 100% against the Cumbrian sides this season.
Regardless of the Macclesfield result, Anselmians have had their most successful season since 1981, will be rewarded with promotion to a reorganised North 1 West, and, unlike the team of 1980-81, maybe they can get all the way to the final of the Cheshire Cup.
