Impressive victory at Eastham

Round 17 saw Burton Rugby Club third in the league make their first ever visit to Eastham. Burton managed a draw in their home game 24 all, the only points Saints have dropped all season and seemed confident bolstered by the heavy conditions and their big pack of forwards.
It was Burton who opened the scoring after just 4 minutes with a cross-field kick to the unmarked winger after the Burton pack had had several attacks thwarted on the line, converted and a 0-7 lead. This spurred Saints however who started to find their rhythm and with breaks by Ewan Nolan and Sam Cotgrave the pack found themselves driving towards the line 10m out when Lewis Kincart picked up the ball at the base of the ruck then side stepped the fullback and over the line, converted by Baldwin for 7 all, Burton number 3 also yellow carded.
Burton again threw everything into attack but Saints held firm and when Oscar Crowe received the ball 25m out there was no stopping him brushing off several tackles he was brought down just before the line but reached out to touch the ball on the line for Saints second try converted by Baldwin for a 14-7 lead. It was all Saints now buoyed by the vocal crowd of past players at their annual lunch, Saints scrum was dominant and with a 10m out scrum again Kincart picked up the ball to run in his second of the game at the side of the posts, easy conversion for Baldwin and a 21-7 HT lead.
Burton continued to attack from the restart, however Saints now totally dominant in both scrum and line out a break from the 10m line to just over the 22m by Sam Gregory before he shipped the ball out to Dan Woods who raced down the wing past a full balcony to score in the corner again converted by Baldwin to bring the score to 28-7 and the bonus try point.
With the Saints pack driving the Burton scrum backwards Captain Will Grabe had an easy score next as the Burton pack crumbled under pressure and was able to pick up the ball before stepping over the line to score converted again by Baldwin 35-7. With Burton pressing Saints a couple of times to no avail a break by Jones found Woods in space before a short pass to Kincart found the scrum half with an easy run in to score under the sticks for a Hatrick, converted for a now very comfortable 42-7 lead.
Final play of the game saw Joe Sanders fall over the line ball in hand for his 24th try of the current campaign and with another perfect conversion 7 out of 7 for Baldwin Saints final score 49-7.
Next fixture in a fortnight is away at Rochdale.
