Late heart ache for Saints

Tony McArdle3 May - 13:38

Harrogate clinch victory with last minute penalty

With last week’s comeback win against Stockport, Saints now faced another Yorkshire side Harrogate. With the pitch bone dry and a warm sunny day, it was Harrogate who made all the early running with their first points coming from a penalty 0-3 then a breakthrough the centre to score under the sticks 0-10.
Saints started to get more of the ball after the initial 20-minute onslaught by Harrogate and a dainty chip over the onrushing defence by Baldwin was collected by Dodd to score between the sticks converted by Baldwin.7-10.
Harrogate had a catch and drive going in themselves and converting taking the score to 7-17, before Saints did the same, with Joe Sanders scoring and Baldwin converting 14-17. Great viewing for the numerous neutrals and supporters from both sides.HT
With a darting run from the back of a maul, it was Lewis Kincart who opened the scoring in the second half, converted by Baldwin to give Saints a slender lead for the first time in the game 21-17. However, Harrogate hit back with a converted try under the sticks after a break from the wing 21-24.
Saints now threw everything into the game scoring three tries first from Dodd in the corner, unconverted, 26-24 then Kincart converted by Baldwin 33-24 and finally by Ben jones with a sprint from his own 22 to score under the sticks again converted 40-24.
Saints however started to fade slightly and with Sanders yellow carded Harrogate again applied pressure scoring two converted tries to make the score 40-38 with a minute left on the clock, Harrogate forced a penalty in the 22 which they kicked to win the game 40-41. The game was an epic battle and could not have been closer. Well done and good luck to Harrogate in the final play off.
Barrie Pilgrim Saints joint DOR said “We have had a great season overall it’s been intense but very enjoyable, we have two excellent young coaches in Derek Salisbury and Chris Pilgrim and a great team of players to work with, the lads have worked hard and we have managed to bring some of the youngsters through which is fantastic for the future of the club. We tailed off at the end couple of games due to injuries and a couple of lads who left for work commitments plus two emigrated so we will be looking to fill a couple of places for next season”.
