Founder Member passes away.

Yesterday I received the sad news that Don Roberts had passed away aged 96.

Don was a founder member of “Old Anselmians” rugby club, club chairman for a record 17 years from 1953 to 1970, Don was also a governor of St Anselms College for many years.

Don could rightly be called the “Father” of Anselmians rugby club.

Don guided the club through its early years, supporting the club both financially and as an outstanding chairman, without Don Roberts we would not have a rugby club today.

He was a prime mover in the acquisition of Malone Field in the mid 1950’s.

Don was a front row forward in his playing days then “took up the whistle” to referee lower team games for many years.

A stalwart club member who worked tirelessly to ensure the continuing success of the club, he never stopped supporting the club.

During a visit to Eastham a few months ago Don was absolutely delighted to see the new clubhouse and facilities.

Don Roberts was a wonderful man with a dry sense of humour, great family man and a great supporter of both Anselmians RUFC and St Anselms College, he will be greatly missed.
