A Wirral v Anselmians match up can always be relied upon to be an entertaining affair and so it proved once again. The Mavs turned up with the usual team and with the addition of the youngsters promised to be an interesting and entertaining affair. Sean, Sam, Dion et al.all promised to bring some dynamism and speed to the team whilst the old guard had the gristle and grim determination to front up to what promised to be an intense occasion.
Due to the debacle that is Vauxhall FC pitch inspection the back pitch was deemed unplayable and as a result our friends down the A41 at Port Sunlight agreed to host us.
The Wirral team that took the pitch looked formidable but the Mavericks were not to be deflected from their aim of securing a win to counteract the loss earlier in the season.
The Mavs team was filled with both youth and experience in equal measure and the emergence of the new ‘young guns’ from the colts showed real promise for the next 80 minutes.
Kick off cane and The Mavericks immediately went in the defensive soaking up pressure from the strong running Wirral forwards. Wave after wave came and the defensive line was impenetrable. Slowly but surely defence turned into attack and the Mavs with the pill in hand proved impossible to live with. Some excellent interplay between forwards and backs, superb offloads and some real dynamic running from the back row soon resulted in the opening try from the Mavs
Sean Walker once again tearing defences apart got two tries this week, Connor Clayton making a rare appearance in the back row grabbed one for himself with the wheels of Dion Elwell and Christian McIvor adding one each. The ever mercurial Andy Thompson not only spotted the gap and went through for his try but continued to kick all of his conversions.
Final try goes to Captain fantastic Andy Smith who rounded off the game to make it a Magnificent Seven.
Now don’t get me wrong this was not all one way traffic Wirral were a very capable unit and scored three tries themselves and could have scored more if it weren’t for the resilient defence and for a certain little wrecking ball affectionately referees to as Stocky (every team should have one but were glad they don’t). A man if the match performance came from the big man, as soon as Wirral were in the offensive up cane stocky to smash us out of defence and into the attack.
So many individual performances stood out today Sam and Andy Smith forming a resilient almost impenetrable partnership in the centres , a resurgent Eddie Brown burrowing into and hitting ducks and nails like a demon.
Overall another fabulous win and more importantly a fabulous performance and as we know it’s always good to chalk up a win in the column against our Clatterbridge compatriots
