The new season gets off to a start with a tough Cheshire Cup match vs Wilmslow

Will Chris Pilgrim be the key which unlocks Wilmslow?
- Ed.

The pre-season has gone well. Training has been very well attended, and the squad has been revitalised under new head coach, Liam ("the Guv") McGovern and his assistants, Liam Sadler and Eddie Kirby. There is a freshness to the work done on the training field and the team management has high expectations for the season.

But, can the undoubted enthusiasm running through the squad be translated into performances which will secure a top-half of the table end to the season?

Today, we will get a clue.

Wilmslow were demoted from level 5 last season but remain a level above Saints. They have recruited in the closed season adding a premiership centre, Jennings, from Sale. In new head coach, Chris Jones, they have an internationally qualified forwards guru and with ex-Saints star forwards, Stu Costello and Harry O'Loughlin, Wilmslow will be a tough outfit to contain.

However, we will have a potent threat of our own with a powerful backline which will be more than a match for anything Wilmslow can throw at us. With our own premiership Scrum-half, Chris Pilgrim, player coach, Liam McGovern, Liam Sadler and a rejuvenated Mark Petterson making up a classy mid-midfield; and a back three of Price, Cummings and Bramhall, we should have enough fire-power when in possession.

Although there is little prestige left in the watered-down County competition, This contest will be a good indicator of how well the coaching team has revived the squad after the trauma of last season's campaign.
