Saints traveled to Hare Lane with close on 30 players.
With Chester playing a touring team from Driffield we had agreed this would be a development game. The open and flowing rugby that followed was just what everyone wanted.
In the first half Chester were the stronger outfit. A few of the Saints were looking for the normal game breakers, then it occurred to them they were not coming on so the lads drew breadth and took the fight to Chester.
Having played Chester down through that age groups it interesting to note a few of the nailed on A team players are now fighting to regain their places in a strong and improving B team setup. We often say that the Ok player of one year becomes the standout of the next - Chester prove the point - we are seeing many of our lads improving week on week. Thats what we are all about, the result is just some numbers on a bit of cyber space!
Noel pointed it out to me mid week that running 2 teams and c40+ kids does have it challenges but with the rugby on display on Sunday its all worth it. We have a different challenge with one and half teams available most weeks. We ensure people get equal game time and are getting they right type of game time.
Fuller match report to follow when one of the coaches writes it up.
I only got to watch the last 1/4 but Pete was so unlucky not to score when running a great support line, good Chester tracking back denied him. Alex Y looked a danger, as did Ethan. Morty moved the ball well from the base of the breakdown and the forwards were winning most of the 50-50 ball. From what Im told the 20 points that lads shipped prior to waking up were the difference - we slogged it out toe-to -toe after shipping a few early tries, but Im sure a few more name checks will be reported on in the next few days.
Many thanks to Chester for ref'ing and for the hospitality prior, during and post match. We will see you at Caldy on Sunday - its a small world!
