After two consecutive home games, the 1st XV are on their travels this week with a short trip to Warrington. We have reached the half-way point of the season.
Warrington is another one of many well-established clubs in this league. They were founded in 1876 and, in an area famous for rugby league, such longevity is to be admired.
We last played Warrington in season 2009-10 in South Lancashire/Cheshire1. We won at “The Fortress”, 32-10, and also the return fixture at Malone Field, 29-3. They would be relegated at the end of that season.
Our paths have not crossed since. In 2011, when we were being promoted to North One West, Warrington were winning South Lancashire/Cheshire 2, and when we were relegated in 2012-13, Warrington were promoted in our place to North One West.
Warrington are currently tenth, having won six and lost six games. They won their first two games of the season, both away. Indeed, according to the RFU website, Warrington have played no less than eight of their twelve games thus far, away from Walton Lea Road.
Impressive wins against Northwich, Stockport, and, significantly, a 26-22 victory against high-flying Douglas, attest to their quality. If we add that four of their six defeats have been by five points or less, we can see that Warrington are a fine, combative side.
Whilst our home loss last Saturday against Birkenhead Park flattered the visitors, Warrington may feel the same, having lost at Broughton Park last week, 35-10.
Coaches and players know what is wrong with recent Saints’ performances but they remain firmly optimistic of the side’s potential. It seems obvious that a losing team does not always get the breaks and, whilst Anselmians have been on the wrong end of several close decisions, the fact is that you make your own luck.
Coach McKinney is well aware of this truism and will endeavour to be positive about the team and its prospects. A breakthrough is not far away and Saints supporters will hope that it begins at Warrington.
