This Saturday we visit Northwich for a Cheshire Vase fixture.

Last Tuesday, Saints were hoping for some encouraging signs in the game against Collegiate. It was hoped that there would be identifiable improvement on the Mold game, which we lost by five tries to three. Unfortunately, at the eleventh hour, the visitors cried off and extra training was the only option.

It is to be hoped that Northwich are more accommodating. The signs are not good. Northwich finished in an impressive third in North One West winning two-thirds of their 24 games. This well-established club has a distinguished history and, since 2016 has prospered in the higher division.

Anselmians will be cautious, but must be ambitious. It is the work done in the close season which will be the basis for any Anselmian victory. Statistics and history should count for nothing. After all, in the Cheshire cup competitions, we do not have an impressive record. On the equivalent Saturday at the beginning of last season, we lost 24-31 to Winnington Park and, the year before, we were thoroughly beaten 12-72 by Wilmslow at Malone Field.
