Anselmians "Warrior" Sam Pickup is selected for Cheshire

Newly Selected Cheshire Player, Sam Pickup, Answers Our Questions.

When did you start playing rugby?
I started playing in November 2017 but have always been fond of watching the sport on TV and more recently the Birkenhead Panthers womens team (where I support my fiancée). The fire began before I joined Anselmians but I didn’t feel comfortable going straight into a well-established team.

Why did you choose to start playing rugby?
[i]I had chosen football as ‘my sport’ and to be honest I just wasn’t enjoying playing it anymore. I wanted to gain friends and confidence with a bunch of like-minded women. Socially I’ve suffered over the last few years but I wanted to come out of my shell and it was from comments on the Anselmians Facebook page that made me want to try it. Although I needed a few weeks to gain the courage to come to Anselmians!

How did you feel about trying out for county?
I was really nervous but had the backing of my entire team to go for it. My fiancée trialled too which was even more nerve wracking as she has played for years. When I got there the instructions were clear and I decided to just play as I train. I was thrilled to get in. Couldn’t believe it!

What aspects of previous sports do you think help you with playing rugby?
Football definitely helps with rugby as far as kicking is concerned. Kicking is something I feel confident in and I know I am good at. The only difference is that now I’m kicking an egg and not a round ball and the goal is a little higher! I’ve always been a creator within thefootball scene and a good game reader so I think that helps me too.

What is your favourite thing about training at Anselmians?
My favourite part of training is knowing that it’s fun and there is no pressure. The coaches give more than any other team I have experienced. Also, the ladies are a weekly reminder that it’s easy to make friends and achieve something together.

What is your favourite thing about playing games for Anselmians?
I love the competitiveness and skill that he girls bring to the pitch. The sense of togetherness is amazing, everyone plays for each other and the courtesy for the ref is something which football really needs to buy into. There’s mutual respect and no nonsense off the pitch, just fun and game play.

How do you think your team mates would describe you?
I think they’d say I was loud, they’d say I keep everyone motivated and they’d probably say I am awesome at kicking!

Finally, what would you say to any lady out there who is wanting to play rugby but thinks she’ll be rubbish at it?
To ANYBODY out there who believes that they can’t do something- you really, really can. All you need is the mindset and desire to want to achieve. Nothing is impossible…..the word itself says I’m Possible…..so just do it.
